For years, finding something online started the same way.
Open Google. Type a few keywords. Scroll through the results. Open three tabs. Close two. Find another article. Maybe add "Reddit" to the search because the first page somehow isn't helping. 😅
That routine is starting to change.
Now the first move for a lot of questions is simply to ask AI.
Need a laptop recommendation? Ask AI.
Trying to understand a weird error message? Screenshot it and ask.
Planning five days in Seoul? AI can build the itinerary.
Don't understand a 30 page document? Upload it and ask for the simple version.
The difference sounds small, but it changes how people interact with the internet.
Google traditionally gives places where the answer might be.
AI tries to give the answer itself.
And honestly, that's incredibly convenient.
Nobody really enjoys opening six websites just to find out whether a USB C charger will work with a particular laptop. If AI can understand the question, compare the information and explain it in 20 seconds, the old search process suddenly feels like extra work.
But there's a catch.
Search results make it obvious that information comes from somewhere. There's a website, an author, a publication date and usually some clues about whether the source deserves trust.
AI can make all of that almost invisible.
A response arrives nicely written and confidently explained, but the user still has to figure out whether the information is correct, current or completely misunderstood.
That's probably why the search box isn't disappearing tomorrow.
For simple questions, AI might increasingly become the first stop. For important questions, people may still need to open the original sources, compare information and check what was actually said.
There's another interesting side to this too.
If fewer people click websites because AI already gave them the answer, what happens to the websites producing that information?
Blogs, forums, news sites and independent publishers still need readers. The internet works because somebody creates the stuff everyone searches for.
AI makes accessing that knowledge easier.
But it still needs knowledge to exist in the first place.
Maybe the future isn't AI replacing search completely.
Maybe search becomes something happening quietly behind AI.
Instead of searching through the internet ourselves, AI searches, reads and brings something back.
The search box might still be there.
People may simply stop typing into it.
