September is here and something feels slightly strange in the camera world.
Where are the new Nikons?
So far in 2026, Nikon hasn't launched a new camera body. That's pretty noticeable for a brand competing with Sony, Canon and Fujifilm in a market where new cameras usually generate plenty of attention. (Amateur Photographer)
But quiet doesn't necessarily mean nothing is happening.
Nikon has actually been busy elsewhere.
Earlier this year it launched the second generation NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II and confirmed development of a new 120-300mm f/2.8 lens with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. The company has also continued updating its ZR cinema camera. (Nikon)
And the ZR might be the bigger clue.
Nikon Isn't Just Nikon Anymore
Nikon acquired RED Digital Cinema in 2024, and the first big result was the Nikon ZR, launched in 2025.
This wasn't simply another Nikon mirrorless camera with better video.
The ZR brought RED colour science and R3D NE RAW into Nikon's Z Cinema system, while keeping Nikon autofocus, Z mount lenses and a relatively compact body. (Nikon USA)
That combination could tell more about Nikon's future than another yearly camera refresh.
For years, Nikon was primarily associated with photography.
Now it has a serious route into cinema.
Maybe Cameras Don't Need a New Model Every Year
There's another possibility.
Perhaps the camera industry is reaching the point smartphones reached a few years ago.
New doesn't automatically mean dramatically better anymore.
A Nikon Z8 doesn't suddenly become a bad camera because it's three years old. Neither does a Z6III become outdated because Nikon hasn't replaced it yet.
Modern cameras are already extremely capable.
So instead of releasing another body just to keep the launch calendar busy, Nikon may have more to gain from lenses, firmware, cinema products and whatever eventually comes from deeper integration with RED.
There are rumours about future Nikon cameras, of course, but rumours are still rumours. Reports have also suggested that some expected Nikon products may have been delayed. (Digital Camera World)
For now, the most interesting thing about Nikon in 2026 isn't a shiny new camera.
It's trying to figure out what Nikon is becoming next.
