Back in 2008, TechViewz covered a strange little computer from Japan called the WILLCOM D4.

Looking at it today, the specs sound almost funny. A 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, 40GB hard drive and Windows Vista running on a tiny 5 inch screen.

But forget the specs for a moment.

The idea behind it was actually pretty cool.

The WILLCOM D4, made by Sharp, tried to squeeze a proper Windows PC into something small enough to carry almost anywhere. It had a touchscreen, sliding QWERTY keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth and mobile PHS connectivity. Sharp was essentially asking a question that still exists today: how small can a proper PC become?

And remember, this was 2008.

The first iPhone had only arrived the year before. The iPad didn't exist yet. Smartphones hadn't become the pocket computers everyone carries today.

So the D4 was definitely unusual.

The hardware didn't age well

Trying to use one today would probably be painful.

Windows Vista with 1GB RAM wasn't exactly a dream combination even back then. The Atom Z520 was designed around low power rather than serious performance, and a 40GB hard drive feels tiny compared with today's phones.

Battery life was another compromise. Making a full Windows machine this small meant squeezing everything into a form factor that wasn't quite a laptop and wasn't quite a phone.

It was ambitious, but also slightly awkward.

And that's probably why devices like this remained niche.

Then 2026 happened

Look at today's handheld PC market and suddenly the WILLCOM D4 doesn't seem quite so weird.

Steam Deck showed there was serious demand for handheld PC hardware. Windows handhelds followed. GPD built tiny laptops. Devices from ASUS, Lenovo, AYANEO and others now put surprisingly powerful PC hardware into machines that can fit inside a small bag.

The technology finally caught up with the idea.

Modern processors are dramatically faster while consuming less power. SSDs replaced tiny mechanical hard drives. Displays improved. Batteries improved. WiFi became faster. USB C simplified connectivity.

Even Windows on small touchscreen devices makes much more sense today than Windows Vista did in 2008.

So was the WILLCOM D4 ahead of its time?

Probably.

But being early isn't always an advantage.

A good technology idea launched before processors, batteries, software and connectivity are ready can still become a bad product experience.

That's what makes looking back at the original TechViewz WILLCOM D4 post from 2008 interesting.

The D4 itself didn't become the future.

But the idea behind it somehow survived.

Eighteen years later, people are once again buying tiny PCs, handheld computers and devices designed to put desktop computing into something much smaller.

Maybe the WILLCOM D4 wasn't a failed idea.

Maybe it just arrived about a decade too early.
