Remember when finding something online meant opening Google, clicking five links, closing three because they were useless, then somehow ending up on Reddit?
Messy.
But at least we knew we were searching.
Now we just ask AI.
"What's the best laptop for university?"
"Explain this error."
"Plan my 4 day trip to Tokyo."
"Which camera should I buy?"
And boom.
One answer.
Clean. Organised. No 17 tabs open.
Honestly, it's great.
Until the AI is wrong.
The problem is that wrong answers can look really good
Bad Google results usually look bad.
Some random website from 2014 with ten ads and a flashing DOWNLOAD button? Yeah, we're probably not trusting that. 😅
AI is different.
It can give you a completely wrong answer in perfect English.
Confident tone.
Nice explanation.
Bullet points.
Maybe even a table.
Everything looks trustworthy.
That's what makes checking harder.
Search used to show us the sources
Google didn't really give us the answer.
It gave us places to look.
We decided which website to trust.
AI flips that around.
It reads, processes and gives us something that already looks finished.
Which means we're slowly moving from:
"Where can I find the answer?"
to:
"Can I trust this answer?"
That's a very different internet skill.
For small stuff, who cares
Ask AI how long to boil an egg and getting the timing slightly wrong probably isn't going to destroy your life.
But what about something bigger?
Medical information.
Financial decisions.
Legal questions.
Cybersecurity.
University assignments.
Current news.
Suddenly, checking matters.
And here's the funny part.
AI saves us time searching, but sometimes we have to spend that saved time checking whether AI made something up.
Maybe searching isn't disappearing
It's just changing.
Knowing how to Google used to be an actual skill.
Knowing the right keywords. Comparing websites. Finding the useful result hidden somewhere on page two.
Now the skill might be different.
Ask better questions.
Request sources.
Check dates.
Open the original article.
Compare important claims.
Know when not to trust the first answer.
AI has made getting an answer ridiculously easy.
But getting the right answer?
That still requires us.
And maybe that's the part of search AI can't completely replace.
