There is a weird point in a cybersecurity career nobody really prepares you for.
You've been working for 20 years or more. You've survived incidents, migrations, bad projects, difficult bosses, technology changes and probably enough security tools to fill an entire Gartner chart.
You would think all that experience makes finding the next job easier.
Apparently, not always.
At some point, "experienced" quietly becomes "overqualified."
Companies want someone senior, but not too senior. They want leadership experience, but worry about your salary. They want someone who understands the business, but the recruitment system is still searching for exact product names and certifications.
It's a strange contradiction.
Cybersecurity keeps talking about the talent shortage while experienced people can struggle to get through the front door.
And maybe we're measuring experience the wrong way.
Someone who has worked through multiple generations of technology isn't valuable because they remember Windows NT or configured firewalls 20 years ago.
They're valuable because they've seen patterns repeat.
New platform. Same identity problem.
New cloud. Same configuration mistakes.
New security tool. Same assumption that buying technology somehow fixes everything.
That's why this piece on the cybersecurity career trap facing experienced Gen X professionals makes an interesting point: the tools change, but many of the underlying security problems don't.
Of course, experience isn't a lifetime membership card.
If you've been in cybersecurity for 25 years but stopped learning 10 years ago, that's a problem too.
Senior professionals still need to understand cloud, AI, modern architecture and how the industry is changing. The difference is they don't need to pretend they're 25 again.
Maybe the bigger change is how we think about the second half of a tech career.
It doesn't always have to be:
Engineer → Manager → Director → CISO → Retirement.
It could be architect. Advisor. Consultant. Mentor. Specialist. Fractional leader. Or someone organisations bring in when the problem is too messy for the playbook.
Because eventually, knowing every new tool matters less. Knowing what usually goes wrong becomes the real skill.
