Remember when filters were just part of the app?

You opened Instagram, picked one, made the photo look slightly better than reality and moved on.

Now even that is starting to look like another subscription.

Meta has launched Meta One, a paid subscription that adds enhanced AI capabilities across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. According to Reuters, the service includes more than 50 features focused on content creation, audience engagement and business management, and had already reached 15 million subscriptions and trials during its phased rollout.

That feels like a small product update.

It is actually part of a much bigger shift.

We already pay monthly for music.

Movies.

Cloud storage.

Games.

Photo editing.

Productivity apps.

Sometimes even basic features that used to come with hardware we already bought.

Now AI is becoming the next subscription layer.

Want better editing? Pay.

Want smarter content tools? Pay.

Want more AI features inside apps you already use every day? Probably pay.

The strange part is how normal this is starting to feel.

A few years ago, people complained about paying for apps once.

Then subscriptions became normal.

Now we are moving toward subscriptions inside subscriptions, where the basic app is free but the features people actually want sit behind another monthly tier.

Instagram is a perfect place for this because AI fits naturally into what people already do there.

Remove something from a photo.

Change the background.

Improve the lighting.

Generate a caption.

Create an image.

Help edit a Reel.

If those features become good enough, people who create content every day may happily pay for them.

And that is probably what the platforms are betting on.

The bigger question is what happens when AI stops feeling like an optional extra.

If the free version of an app becomes noticeably worse than the paid AI version, then AI is no longer just another feature.

It becomes the upgrade path.

That could change how we think about software completely.

We used to buy better hardware to get better technology.

Now the hardware may stay exactly the same.

We just unlock more intelligence every month.

Maybe the future of apps is not free versus paid anymore.

It is basic versus AI-enhanced.

And apparently, even our filters are joining the subscription economy.
