Vibe coding feels almost magical the first time it works.

You describe what you want, an AI coding assistant generates the code, and suddenly there is a working page, script, API or application sitting in front of you.

What used to take hours can sometimes take minutes.

That is the exciting part.

The expensive part usually comes later.

Generated code can work without being particularly good. It may use unnecessary dependencies, duplicate logic, ignore edge cases or make assumptions that only become obvious when something breaks.

And when it does break, the speed advantage can disappear very quickly.

A developer who wrote the code manually usually has some mental model of how the pieces fit together. With vibe coding, it is possible to create hundreds of lines of code without really understanding the structure underneath.

That makes debugging different.

Instead of asking, “Where did I make the mistake?” you may have to ask, “Why did the AI design it this way in the first place?”

That can take longer.

The problem becomes worse when the application grows. One generated feature depends on another generated feature. A quick fix introduces another workaround. Dependencies accumulate. Naming becomes inconsistent. Logic starts spreading across files.

Everything still works.

Until it does not.

This is where AI coding changes the economics of software development.

Writing code is getting cheaper.

Understanding, testing and maintaining code may become more valuable.

That does not mean vibe coding is bad. It can be incredibly useful for prototypes, small tools, automation, learning and getting an idea into working form quickly.

The risk is assuming that fast creation also means cheap ownership.

A feature that takes ten minutes to generate can still take hours to troubleshoot later. A small architectural shortcut can become expensive once real users, real data and production systems are involved.

The best use of AI coding may not be to remove developers from the process.

It may be to move their attention.

Less time typing boilerplate.

More time reviewing logic, testing assumptions, checking security, understanding dependencies and deciding whether the generated solution is something they actually want to maintain.

Vibe coding makes software faster to create.

It does not make software free to understand.

And eventually, somebody still has to understand it.
