For years, humanoid robots have been easy to dismiss as impressive stage demonstrations. They walk across a conference floor, pick up a box, wave at the audience, and then disappear back into a lab. The question was always the same: when will these machines actually do useful work?

That is starting to change.

Chinese startup Spirit AI says dozens of its Moz1 humanoid robots are already working on production lines at companies including CATL and JD.com. The company says its robots can now complete simple tasks in structured environments with around a 90% success rate, while it continues training them with real-world data rather than relying entirely on simulation. That is an important shift. A factory floor is very different from a carefully controlled demo. The robot has to repeat the same task reliably, deal with real objects, work around people and keep operating for long periods without becoming an expensive distraction.

Other companies are moving in the same direction. Agility Robotics recently introduced Digit 5, designed specifically to work close to humans without the physical safety barriers traditionally required around industrial robots. Agility says previous Digit robots have already accumulated more than 65,000 hours of operation across commercial deployments. (Agility Robotics)

China is also pushing hard on manufacturing scale. UBTECH has opened a factory designed to produce more than 10,000 humanoid and service robots a year, while XPeng has started a dedicated production line for its IRON humanoid robot. (The Robotics Media)

The interesting part is that humanoid robots do not necessarily need to behave like humans to become useful.

Their biggest advantage may simply be that factories, warehouses and workplaces were already designed around the human body. Doors, shelves, tools, stairs and workstations all assume roughly human proportions.

Instead of rebuilding the environment for robots, companies are trying to build robots that fit into the environment we already have.

We are still a long way from having a general-purpose robot doing everything around the house.

But the humanoid robot is starting to move from the stage to the production line.

And that may be the moment when the technology becomes much more interesting.
